SECTION A - Barcode Fundamentals

What is a barcode?

A barcode is a unique 12- or 13-digit number (UPC or EAN) used by retailers and marketplaces to identify a product in their sales and inventory systems.

What is the difference between UPC and EAN?

UPC codes have 12 digits and are common in the USA and Canada. EAN codes have 13 digits and are used internationally. Both formats are globally recognised and most retailers can use either.

Do I need a barcode to sell my product?

If the retailer or marketplace you want to sell on uses barcodes, then yes. Most online marketplaces (including Amazon) require one GTIN (barcode number) per product.

Can I use the same barcode for multiple products?

No. Each product - and each variation such as size or colour - needs its own barcode.

What information does a barcode contain?

The barcode does not store product data. It is simply a unique number. Retailers link that number to your product information in their systems.

Can barcodes expire?

No. Once assigned to you, they do not expire and are not reused.

Can I use barcodes on any product?

Barcodes can be used on almost all retail products except books and magazines (they require ISBN/ISSN numbers).

Variations & Bundles

Do variations need different barcodes?

Yes. Size, colour, flavour, weight and other variations each require their own barcode.

Do product bundles or multipacks need a barcode?

Yes. Each bundle or multipack configuration needs a separate barcode.

SECTION B - Amazon & Marketplace FAQs

Do your barcodes work with Amazon?

Yes, our UPC/EAN barcodes are accepted on all Amazon marketplaces in 99% of cases.

Where do problems occur on Amazon?

The small minority of cases usually involve:

  • Products with an existing ASIN
  • Trademark/Branded products with manufacturer barcodes
  • Amazon Brand Registry listings

Do your barcodes work with Walmart?

Yes, for Walmart Online Marketplace. Walmart physical stores require barcodes directly from GS1.

Do your barcodes work on Shopify, Etsy, Noon, eBay, Google Merchant/Shopping Programs?

Yes, no listing issues reported on these platforms.

Will I get support if Amazon rejects my listing?

Yes, we provide support and suggested solutions. Most listing messages are resolved quickly.

Brand Registry, Trademark & ASIN Issues

Do your barcodes work with Amazon Brand Registry?

Brand Registry often requires barcodes directly from GS1. Many private-label sellers use reseller barcodes successfully before joining Brand Registry.

What if the product I am trying to list, already exists on Amazon?

This usually means the ASIN already exists. You may need to create a new ASIN or list your product under the existing ASIN.

What if my product already has a manufacturer barcode?

Trademark/Branded products with manufacturer barcodes should use the original barcode. Amazon often rejects replacements.

FBA, Printing & Labelling

Can I use your barcodes for Amazon FBA?

Yes. They work for carton and individual unit labelling. FBA will link the barcode to your product details.

Can I print the barcodes myself?

Yes. We supply high-resolution artwork suitable for printing at home, commercially, or on sticker labels.

Do you supply physical barcode labels?

At present we supply digital artwork only. Labels can be printed using any standard label printer or service.

SECTION C - GS1, Reseller & Legal/Compliance FAQs

Are your barcodes GS1-origin?

Yes. Our barcodes originate from the UCC (now GS1-US) and were issued in bulk to companies who did not fully use their assigned numbers.

Are reseller barcodes legal to use?

Yes, reseller barcodes are legally recognised and widely used by sellers who do not need a GS1 certificate or membership.

What’s the difference between GS1 and a reseller?

GS1 assigns numbers via paid membership and annual fees and issues certificates. Resellers provide unused numbers from GS1-origin blocks with no ongoing fees.

Are reseller barcodes widely used?

Yes, they are used by thousands of private label and marketplace sellers who do not require GS1 membership or certificates.

Will I receive a GS1 certificate?

No, only GS1 can issue certificates. 99%+ of retailers do not require one.

Will my details be listed in the GS1 database?

No. This does not affect 99%+ of marketplaces or retailers.

Do I need to be a registered company?

No, both individuals and businesses can purchase.

Are your barcodes unique to me?

Yes. Once sold, they are never re-issued. We keep a record of which numbers are assigned to which buyer etc.

International Use & Compliance

Will these barcodes work worldwide?

Yes. Customers use our codes in the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Africa, South America, Australasia, the Middle East and Asia.

Will my barcode work in every retail store?

No. There are some retailers which will require you to supply them with A GS1 certificate. A GS1 certificate is only issued to you when you source directly from GS1. No barcode reseller - including us - can issue you with a GS1 certificate. Most retailers (99%+) do not require a GS1 issued certificate. In fact, there is a very small number of retailers which require you to source barcodes directly from GS1. These retailers include, but is not limited to, Walmart, Kroger, Costco, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Home Depot, Lowe's, Fred Meyer and a few other major retailers/chains - mainly in the US and UK.

If you are not sure, then please check with your retailer beforehand for their barcoding requirements. Please note that it is your responsibility to clarify with a retailer(s) to see if they require you to provide them with a GS1 certificate and to have your details within the GS1 database. If this is the case, then again, you can only source codes directly from GS1.

Do EU retailers require EANs?

Most European retailers prefer EANs, but many can also accept UPCs.

What if I am selling in both the US and Europe?

We provide both UPC and EAN formats so you can use whichever format each retailer prefers.
